2026 Beginner Bag Maker class, 5 Series, 4 Projects

This is a 5-session series designed to help beginners learn the basic skills and techniques of bag making, building a solid foundation, boosting confidence, and having fun while creating four bags/ totes.
The first class of 5 will review what is needed for the series, including selecting fabric that is both soft and stable, as well as zippers and any necessary tools, such as rulers and clips. For each class, you will be given instructions for the prep for the next session. You can use our classroom machines, or we suggest that if you have a Bernina machine, bring it to class. (No sewing in the first class)

Week 1: The Basics Class will cover no sewing; we will walk through the basics of bag making, review how to read patterns, and discuss the necessary supplies and tools, including rulers, rotary cutters, cutting mats, and other accessories needed for the projects. We will discuss the following materials: Reading the patterns (provided at this session), required fabric, thread, stabilizer (Soft and Stable), interfacing, mesh, fold-over elastic, zippers, and machine feet (Walking foot, ¼ foot, and edge stitch foot). Also, we will cover scissors and thread snips, Chalk markers, and a mechanical pencil. Thread. We will then shop for the items needed for this series.

WEEK 2- Bring to class: clips, marking pens, pencil or chalk, Rulers, Fabric, Soft and Stable, Matching Thread, Clear Vinyl, ByAnnie or size five zippers with slides, Zippers, Foldover Elastic, ByAnnie Mesh, Fusable Interfacing (SF 101 or similar), and a zipper jig.
